About Eastbourne College

Mission statement

“The College’s primary aim is to equip children to lead happy, fulfilled lives in a safe environment. We operate on the basis of shared values: pursuit of excellence, integrity, participation, and kindness.”

Academics

Eastbourne College strives for academic excellence, taking a holistic approach to education. Class sizes are small, allowing students the attention and space they require. By the time pupils reach A Level, a degree of independent learning and self-responsibility is introduced to help prepare them for university learning or their chosen career.

Most pupils in Sixth Form will finish with three, or occasionally four, A Levels. School leavers continue to a range of universities, and the school has a high acceptance rate at universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Activities & sports

The school holds a reputation for excellence in sports, such as in tennis and swimming, but stresses that participation and enjoyment are equally important. For example, Eastbourne offers tennis to all pupils, whilst also running a year-round programme specifically for elite tennis players. Likewise, swimming is available to all pupils as an activity or games option, whilst those pupils in the swim club train more regularly in mornings and evenings during the week. The highly successful swim club at Eastbourne benefits from a highly modern six-lane swimming pool with touch-pad timing.

Eastbourne College's £33 million development has resulted in students being able to utilise first-class facilities including a new dance studio, swimming pool and squash court. Extracurricular activities aren’t limited to sports - students can benefit from outstanding drama, art and music programmes as well as exciting design and technology opportunities. Eastbourne College holds a strong reputation for drama, which is accessible to all pupils. The school puts on multiple productions annually, giving all students a chance to participate either on stage or backstage - their inclusive environment ensures that everyone can be involved. Facilities include three indoor drama spaces and an outdoor performance area.

International student community

Eastbourne College welcomes and supports international students who choose to study there, with school inspection reports noting that international pupils are well integrated into the school community. The number of students from abroad usually sits just below 20% of the total pupil intake each year.

Eastbourne College provides compulsory English as an Additional Language lessons for international pupils, and Sixth Form pupils wishing to continue to UK Higher Education will follow a programme that prepares them for the IELTS (International Language Testing System).

Boarding life

Eastbourne College offers an exciting boarding life outside of the classroom. Their optional Saturday morning programme offers study support and co-curricular activities to allow students time to pursue their interests and access extra help with school work. Other planned activities take place at the weekends, including sports events, theatre trips, or visits to surrounding areas. Inter-house competitions encourage students to develop a sense of house loyalty and belonging.
