How is higher education in the UK different from in the USA?

In the UK, degrees generally last three years and offer earlier specialisation (except in Scotland, where the system is slightly different). Courses in the US are usually four years and allow students more flexibility to explore different subjects before choosing their 'major'.

The UK has a rich academic heritage, with some universities established as far back as the 1200s. It provides a safe environment, and currently has more stability within higher education policy and post-study work rights. Students at a UK university can benefit from proximity to Europe and easy travel to a wide range of countries and study abroad opportunities. The UK can also be a more affordable option for international students due to a variety of factors such as lower tuition fees, shorter time to graduate, and currency exchange rates.

The US student experience is more campus-focused, with a fantastic array of facilities all on one site and a strong emphasis on the whole student. Extracurricular activities are a core part of university life for students in the United States.

The level of English required to study in the UK varies between universities, and sometimes even between different courses at the same university.

UK universities accept a range of English language tests, including IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge English and Duolingo. Universities will state their English language requirements and the accepted English language tests on their websites, and we will also review these options with you during the early stages of your decision-making process.

A SELT (Secure English Language Test) is a government-approved test that may be required for your visa application. You can only take a SELT with one of the approved test providers.

Which international qualifications do UK universities accept? If UK universities don't accept my qualifications, how do I apply?

UK universities increasingly accept a wide range of international qualifications. However, each university sets its own entry requirements, so the qualifications accepted and the grades required vary across institutions.

If the qualifications you have achieved do not meet the minimum entry requirements for direct entry to a UK university, there are other pathways available - such as completing an international foundation programme. Contact us to explore your best options.
