About Sedbergh School

Mission statement

“Our mission is to ensure each pupil is encouraged to realise their full potential, exploring the limits of their ability whilst learning to thrive outside their own comfort zone.”

Academics

At UK boarding schools, the term ‘value-added’ measures how much additional experience, learning or development a school offers beyond the ‘average’, and Sedbergh ranks amongst the top 10% of schools in the country. The high-achieving school follows a GCSE and A Level curriculum with a separate qualification available in agricultural studies.

Over the last three years, GCSE and A Level results have both risen, with almost 97% achieving grades A* - C at GCSE and 90% of pupils achieving grades A* - C at A Level in 2021. Most students attain highly and are able to progress to their first-choice university. The most popular university destinations of Sedbergh leavers include Oxford, Cambridge, Loughborough, Durham, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

Activities & sports

Sedbergh School offers pupils the opportunities to take part in regular sports that suit their ability. The school encourages both ‘excellence’ and ‘sport for all’ with a belief that the two can co-exist alongside each other. Rugby is among the school’s major sports, and the rugby club is among the best in the country. Sedbergh also boasts great success for its hockey and netball teams. Sedbergh and its Prep School, Casterton, also have excellent equestrian facilities. The school has on-site stables within the school grounds, with varying facilities for different types of riding, all of which are available to riders of all ages and abilities. Pupils can have weekly riding lessons, and those students who have their own ponies or horses are able to bring them to Sedbergh and keep them in the stables. The Sedbergh Equestrian team compete in regular national competitions.

The performing arts are also an important part of life at Sedbergh. Pupils are involved with weekly music assemblies and can take part in one or more of the school’s 22 choirs and ensembles. With over 60 concerts taking place every year, students can improve their skills through regular rehearsal and performance. Many of the school’s music teachers are professional musicians themselves, so students at Sedbergh can be sure they’re learning from the best.

International student community

Sedbergh has a diverse campus and the school recognises the contribution that international students make. To ensure international pupils can attain as highly as possible, the school has made significant investment in the provision of English as an Additional Language (EAL). The school’s Head of EAL is qualified to train other teachers in EAL teaching skills, so almost half of mainstream teachers at Sedbergh have formal qualifications in teaching international students. Sedbergh also offers a yearly international summer school which is an excellent six-week programme that welcomes 1000 pupils from across the world.

Boarding life

The school has two Prep School houses and nine Senior School houses. Sedbergh boarding houses are a hub of social activity with common rooms, libraries and dining rooms where students can spend time together. Inter-house competitions encourage a collaborative environment and allow pupils to develop a strong sense of loyalty and pride towards their individual houses.

Several members of staff are resident in each house, helping to establish a sense of home. These staff are supported by a team of non-resident tutors too. Students at Sedbergh will find they have a network of experienced staff to support their welfare at all times.
