About Lancing College

Mission statement

Lancing College has a Christian foundation in the Anglican tradition. The College, set in the outstanding countryside and housed in fine buildings, educates boys and girls to develop a love of learning and to reach their full potential, enriched by the arts and physical activities. It prepares young men and women of vision and integrity who will be of service to their fellow human beings.

Academics

Lancing College provides an education which inspires a desire for excellence, and which enables children to develop independent, searching minds and to realise their full academic potential. The teachers take delight in going far beyond teaching to the test. The excellent exam results are a wonderful by-product of the more profound and long-lasting scholarly rigour that underpins all that the school strives to do.

Lancing College had a year of excellent GCSE results in 2023. Over 80% of grades scored were at A*-B equivalent with a 97% Grade 9 to 4 success rate and 56% of grades awarded in the Grade 9-7 band, the best in recent years.

Tutors work closely with all pupils and discuss the most appropriate options for A Levels based on academic strengths, personal interests and possible future directions regarding Higher Education and careers. Lancing College’s A Level results for 2023 produced the greatest results for the College in over a decade. 81% of grades achieved were A*-B, 54% at A*-A grades and 21 Upper Sixth students achieved a clean sweep of A and A* grades. The top UK university destinations for Lancing pupils in 2023 were Exeter, Bristol, Bath, Durham and University College London. Lancing also has success in students achieving places at Oxford, Cambridge and overseas universities.

Lancing particularly excels in their Design and Technology Department. It is housed in a building featuring a series of large open-plan workshops with panoramic views over the South Downs and the sea. In Third Form, all pupils have one double lesson per week. Pupils can choose to continue the subject at GCSE; focusing on either Product Design or Engineering. The Department arranges several visits each year - with recent trips including the BMW/MINI factory, the Brunel Degree Show in London, the Goodwood Festival of Speed and other local manufacturing facilities. There are links with Young Enterprise students, who can use the College workshops for manufacturing. The CCF engineering project has seen the construction of a motorcycle engine-powered buggy, while a joint project with the Science Department sees the construction of an electric race car for the annual Greenpower races.

Activities & sports

Hockey, Football, Netball, Tennis and Cricket are among the main sports played at Lancing College. Other sports include Squash, Cross-Country, Basketball, Swimming, Horse Riding, Eton Fives, Golf, Dance, Fencing, Fishing, Sailing, Croquet, Riding, Badminton, Rounders, Water Polo, Aerobics & Fitness, Karate, Climbing, Volleyball, Shooting, and Rugby Sevens.

Lancing is well known for its all-round approach to education and each week time is set aside for pupils to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities. Co-curricular opportunities offer a wonderful chance for learning and personal development outside the academic syllabus. Pupils are encouraged and supported to try new activities (over 120 to choose from) as well as develop their skills.

International student community

Lancing College prides itself on its cosmopolitan community: with children from over 40 nationalities -  some who are from down the road to those who are from 12,000 miles away. All pupils are part of a dynamic community and Lancing College children relish the global perspective that this brings. Everyone is welcome at Lancing College, and everyone has a voice.

Boarding life

Lancing College has a long tradition of welcoming boarders and has adapted over the years to meet the changing lives and needs of parents and pupils. The College’s pastoral provision has recently been recognised as a ‘Significant Strength’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The report reflects the excellence of the College and the superb nature of the care and work with pupils both within and beyond the classroom.

Boarding is available from the age of 13 years (Third Form or Year 9) and every year the school welcomes approximately 100 new boarding pupils to their seven Boarding Houses. Children talk fondly about the joy of belonging to a community, forging friendships, learning to be independent and having access to a diverse array of opportunities.
