About King's Taunton

Mission statement

“Our role is to inspire every child to believe in their potential and empower them with confidence to strive for their greatest ambitions. We aim to provide individual, personalised learning that will be inspiring for life. Pupils have opportunities to discover their talents by trying new things in a happy, supportive community.”

Academics

King’s Hall and King’s College both have strong academic records. The curriculum that is offered is based on GCSE and A Level examinations, with the opportunity to study a BTEC qualification in sport for those who are interested. Apart from maths and english, GCSE pupils have a completely free choice of subjects and can choose between a wide range of options. At A Level, there are 22 different subjects for pupils to choose between.

King’s College prides itself on the breadth of its curriculum and education within which each pupil is challenged and encouraged to achieve their full potential. In 2021, 85% of A Level results were between A* and B. The school also has an award-winning design and technology department.

Activities & sports

King’s College’s programme of sports and activities challenges pupils to develop their confidence, leadership skills and ability to work in a team. In sports, as within the arts, pupils are encouraged to participate at any age and level. The school has the facilities to provide for this – a heated outdoor pool, six astroturf courts, a 250-seat theatre and an outdoor amphitheatre.

Pupils can also take part in outdoor activities such as kayaking, climbing, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Furthermore, King's Taunton has its own Equestrian Centre a short drive away from the school, which has stables and further equestrian facilities. There are regular horseriding competitions between schools, and weekly riding lessons for those interested.

International student community

Approximately 35% of boarders are international students. At King’s College Taunton, there is an International Tutor whose role is to support international students as they settle in to school life, and then throughout the school year.

The school also has an English as an Additional Language (EAL) department which offers varying levels of support depending on English ability and needs. Pupils have the chance to study for Cambridge ESOL certificates if they wish.

Furthermore, in each boarding house an international pupil in the Upper Sixth Form is appointed as International Prefect – someone for international pupils to turn to if they have any questions or concerns.

Boarding life

Around 75% of pupils at King’s College Taunton are full boarders. There are 7 boarding houses – 4 for boys and 3 for girls. School runs Monday – Saturday, but a weekend activity programme is organised to offer boarding pupils a variety of fun options on a Sunday. These options include trips to theme parks and sports events, going paintballing, shopping and spending the afternoon at the cinema.

In the 3rd, 4th and 5th form pupils generally share a room of 4, in the Lower Sixth pupils usually share a double study bedroom, and King’s aims to offer all Upper Sixth pupils their own single study bedroom.
