About King's Ely

Mission statement

“To provide an education that enables young people to discover and build on their strengths and use their talents to help define their identity.”

Academics

Students are encouraged to be reflective in their work so that they can better understand their strengths and weaknesses, helping them to make improvements. They are also taught to be resilient, creative and collaborative in their learning. This helps students adapt to different situations and come up with innovative solutions to problems, whether they are working alone or as a team. This framework teaches them the skills they need in further education and in the work place.

In 2021, King’s Ely had a 94% pass rate for GCSE and 100% for A Level, with 100% of leavers securing a place at university that year and 96% getting their first choice. In A Level drama and theatre, 100% of students have scored in the A* - B range for five years in a row, with 100% of students getting an A* in 2015.

Activities & sports

King’s Ely provides a wide range of co-curricular activities, with sport facilities such as the full-sized Astroturf, sports hall, swimming pool, cricket nets, tennis courts, and more than 50 acres of grass pitches. A popular sport is rowing, as the school is situated nearby the River Ouse, where they have access to “one of the best stretches of river in the UK”. They have a well-stocked boat house and six qualified British Rowing coaches. They also have a free-weights gym, sports hall and dedicated rowing fitness suite.

King’s also has an active arts programme, with a large number of theatre productions every year, including an appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The variety of productions ranges from musicals to open mic nights, to ensure that there is something for everyone interested in performing arts. These performances also allow students interested in backstage roles to explore their interests. To house these productions, the school has a dance studio, a black box theatre, and the Hayward Theatre in King’s Ely Senior. Over a third of students receive some form of music lessons, whether it be an instrument, or vocal lessons and there are regular opportunities for performances. The school also has art facilities which specialise in fashion and textiles, fine art, sculpture and photography.

International student community

King’s Ely welcomes 150 international students from 40 different countries who live and work alongside British students, to allow for a sharing of cultures and an immersive experience for overseas pupils. Language support is provided for non-native English speakers to help them develop their English speaking and literacy skills. In Sixth Form, they are able to receive up to 3 IELTS lessons each week in university English Language preparation, to help each pupil access their first choice of university.

Boarding life

There are 8 day and boarding houses at King’s Ely, and with British and international students living alongside each other, pupils learn to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds and grow to become considerate and tolerant of other views. The boarding houses and attitudes that they encourage are reflective of today’s world. Pupils have regular meetings (both individually and in a group) with Form Tutors who offer support in academia, studying for exams and selecting subjects at GCSE and A Level.
