Settling in at your British boarding school

You’ve probably wondered how to make sure your child will be safe and thrive in the UK while you aren’t with them. Your child’s safety, wellbeing and happiness are priorities for everyone involved in their education.

Whatever our role and expertise, we’re all working together to keep your child safe and secure and provide an environment and support network where they can do well and grow.

We offer a variety of support programmes from medical to academic to emergencies.

Medical care and wellbeing while at school in the UK

Your child’s health is as important to everyone looking after them in the UK as it is to you.

During the school term, medical consultations with the school nurse and doctor will be organised by boarding house staff if your child is unwell. If more specialist medical care is required, the school will contact you and Academic Families to arrange National Health Service (NHS) treatment.

Your child can access NHS care free of charge at the point of delivery either because they are entitled to it as a European national, or because you have paid the International Health Surcharge with their Child Student visa.

If your child is ill during a holiday, the host family will advise Academic Families and arrange consultation with a pharmacist or NHS doctor as required. We will always try to contact you as soon as possible.

Most dental, orthodontic, physiotherapy and ophthalmic treatment can be arranged privately.

Let us know what your preference is and we can accommodate your wishes.

We’ve worked in international education for many years now and we’ve seen it all. Despite meticulous planning, things can suddenly take a turn for the worse or catch you by surprise.

We’ve resolved all kinds of issues from expired passports to medical emergencies. Whatever the situation is, we’re there in a flash.

I highly recommend Academic Families as a great option for the care of your children in Edinburgh.

All the staff always provided the best service for my son - they solved any issues, they were always aware of what was happening with my son, offering him not only their services but also their love and their time.

I do not know what I would have done without them. What a great team!

Quality you can trust

Academic Families has personal and professional experience with boarding schools. Many of our staff attended boarding schools themselves when they were young or have worked in them. We have all lived overseas and most of us are mothers, so we understand how important it is to find the very best education for every child no matter where that might be in the world.

From our headquarters in Edinburgh to our local staff across the UK, our team regularly visits hundreds of British schools. Our excellent knowledge of the UK education system, accreditation by the Boarding School Association (BSA) and certification from the British Council means we understand UK boarding education from the inside and out, and know how to ensure the best education for each child.

In addition, our guardianship service has been Gold accredited by AEGIS (the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students) since 2016 and also by the BSA, so you know, with Academic Families, you're guaranteed to have the best local support anywhere in the UK.

Moreover, our team are trained MHFA Mental Health First Aiders so we are qualified to support our students with any wellbeing and mental health concerns.
