Activities & sports

West Buckland School offers a comprehensive and dynamic range of activities and sports, designed to cater to diverse interests and promote a well-rounded education.

The Tennis Academy provides specialised coaching and training for students, utilising multiple tennis courts and a dedicated coaching team. It caters to both recreational players and those aspiring to compete at higher levels.

Many team sports are available, including rugby, football, netball, hockey, volleyball, basketball and cricket. The school has excellent facilities, including pitches, courts, and a sports hall, to support these activities. Students can participate in individual sports such as athletics, swimming, and cross-country running. The school has a swimming pool and well-maintained tracks and fields for these activities.

The school's location in North Devon allows for unique adventure sports opportunities, including surfing kayaking, and climbing. These activities are designed to build resilience and a love for the outdoors.

International student community

West Buckland School boasts a vibrant and diverse international student community, enriching the school’s cultural fabric and providing a global perspective to its students. Approximately 20% of the student population from Year 7 onwards is made up of international students from 16 different countries.

To support international students in their language development, West Buckland School offers comprehensive EAL support. This includes tailored English language classes, individual tutoring, and integration programs to help students improve their proficiency and confidence in English.

Boarding life

West Buckland School offers a vibrant and nurturing boarding community, providing students with a home-away-from-home environment that fosters independence, friendships and personal growth. The school has three well-equipped boarding houses, each designed to cater to the different needs of students at various stages of their education.

A structured evening programme offers a variety of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, movie nights, and social events. These activities are designed to help students unwind, develop new interests, and build friendships.

The weekend programme is diverse and engaging, featuring excursions to local attractions and larger cities, outdoor adventures, cultural visits, and shopping trips. On-campus activities such as sports tournaments, baking sessions, and study groups are also available.

Dedicated boarding staff provide round-the-clock pastoral care, ensuring that each student’s emotional and social well-being is supported. Regular meetings and open-door policies foster a family-like atmosphere where students feel safe and valued.
