About Taunton School

Mission statement

“We aim to challenge, inspire and nurture young people to succeed in a global community.”

Academics

Taunton School aims to inspire their pupils within academia. They provide a wide choice of exam curriculum (pupils can choose between A Level, IB and BTEC) and they aim to assist every pupil in reaching their full academic potential. They offer a wide and varied range of subjects for pupils to choose from. Taunton School has been offering the IB diploma since 2007 when it became an IB World School. It also offers BTEC qualifications in business as well as in sport and exercise science. Taunton School has excellent educational facilities to aid learning such as their design and technology department which has 3D printers, laser cutters and computer-aided design software. There is also a design and technology scholarship available to students aged 16 and over.

94% of Sixth Form students go on to university or college either in the UK or overseas. More than 50% of these students typically go on to attend a Russell Group university. With regards to exam results, 87% of all grades were between A* and B in 2020.

Activities & sports

Taunton School hopes to challenge pupils with an extensive co-curricular programme that incorporates sport, the arts and many other activities including outdoor education. They aim to develop pupils’ leadership and teamwork skills and they encourage participation in co-curricular activities so that pupils become well-rounded individuals.

Within sport, Taunton School promotes enjoyment and participation, and they support beginners through to elite sport students who play for local or national teams. Within the performing arts, pupils can choose between music, dance, drama, debating and public speaking.

International student community

Taunton School has been welcoming international students for over 100 years and has a large international community from almost 40 different countries. English is a second language for more than 200 pupils at the school.

Taunton School offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes and almost 100 pupils receive additional support with their English language. Depending on their level of English, students have the opportunity to attend the Taunton International School which provides extra levels of support.

Boarding life

Taunton School aims to create a friendly and respectful community atmosphere for its boarding students. The school has a large boarding community with more than half of Senior School pupils boarding. The school has 5 boarding houses – each one providing pupils with a close-knit environment in which they can work, rest and play.
