About Stonyhurst College

Mission statement

"To prepare young people intellectually, spiritually and emotionally to provide leadership in facing the problems of the modern world."

Academics

Stonyhurst College boasts a 100% pass rate for International Baccalaureate and A Level students. Students in Sixth form will have three study route options – A Level, International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) or Cambridge Technical exams (CTECH). Regardless of their route, students will have a wide range of subject options that they can discuss and decide on with the support of their teachers.

Alongside standard subjects like maths and languages, students will also have more specialised options such as psychology, economics and photography. With a teacher-pupil ratio of around 1:7, students can receive the individual support that they need to excel.

Activities & sports

The opportunities for learning outside of the classroom at Stonyhurst are plentiful. The impressive sports facilities include 22 sports pitches, a tennis dome, netball courts and a nine-hole golf course. The 1000-acre estate that the school sits on lends itself to a range of other activities including archery, climbing, horse riding and clay pigeon shooting. Furthermore, Stonyhurst is well-known for its excellence in rugby, with several alumni going on to become professional rugby players. In fact, of the highlights of the school's sporting calendar is the annual Stonyhurst Rugby 7s Tournament.

Sports tours regularly see Stonyhurst pupils venture abroad, with recent netball and rugby tours taking place in Dubai and South Africa. Music and performing arts are also highly encouraged and there are many opportunities to get involved both on stage and backstage at school concerts and shows.

International student community

Around two-thirds of Stonyhurst students are international, so new international pupils will join a diverse and exciting campus with students from all over the world. The school regularly reports seeing significant improvement in the English language ability of their international pupils as a result of studying and living in a friendly and encouraging environment.

Boarding life

Stonyhurst College describes itself as a ‘7-days-a-week’ school and boarding is a central part of life at the College. Weekend activities for boarders include visits to cities such as York and Liverpool, theatre and cinema trips, and sports events. Boarding houses are organised horizontally so that students will be living with other pupils in their year group. Houses are all well-equipped and Houseparents work to create a sense of community and home in every house.
