Academic Families works with more than 450 schools throughout the UK, and we have become experts at matching children to the right boarding school for them in order to ensure each student thrives.
We're delighted to present one of our partner schools:
St Francis' College in Hertfordshire, England.
At St. Francis' College our mission is to inspire every student to Dream, Dare & Achieve. We are academically outstanding - in fact we're one of the top three girls' schools in the area; with each student achieving on average at least a grade higher than their “expected outcome” across their subjects. However, unlike some schools, we are not an academic "hot-house". Our pupils unlock their individual successes through our incredibly supportive school community and the holistic education we provide - we place great emphasis on each pupil’s journey of growth and development.
At St. Francis’ College, academic excellence is underpinned by a commitment to high expectations, personalised support, and a broad, ambitious curriculum. The College fosters intellectual curiosity and independent thinking, with strong values placed on resilience, diligence, and academic integrity. A Level and GCSE results continue to rise impressively, with 2024 A Level results seeing over 25% of entries awarded A* and 53% A*-A, well above national averages. GCSE outcomes are similarly outstanding, with 80% of grades at 9–7 in 2023 and over 50% at that level again in 2024. Students regularly go on to top universities including Cambridge, UCL, Warwick, Manchester, and Exeter, studying a diverse range of subjects from Engineering and Biology to Law and Business. The Extended Project Qualification also thrives, with 90% awarded A*/A grades, reflecting the College’s emphasis on research and critical thinking.
St. Francis’ College offers a dynamic and well-rounded programme of Physical Education and extracurricular activities, supported by extensive facilities and a nurturing environment. The PE curriculum encourages fitness, teamwork, and confidence through a wide range of team sports, individual pursuits, and fitness sessions. Beyond lessons, students take part in numerous clubs, including music, drama, art, academic societies, and sports such as swimming, ballet, and athletics.
The College is situated on seven spacious acres. It boasts exceptional facilities, including a 330-seat theatre, an indoor heated swimming pool, a modern fitness suite, state-of-the-art science laboratories, a chapel, and a dedicated Sixth Form Centre. These resources help create a vibrant learning atmosphere that supports both academic excellence and personal growth. Sixth Form students also benefit from leadership opportunities and a tailored enrichment programme, preparing them for life beyond school as confident, well-rounded individuals.
St. Francis’ College is proud to welcome international students from a wide range of countries, creating a diverse and inclusive community that enriches the experience of all pupils. International students make up a significant proportion of the student body, and the cultural exchange that takes place is highly valued throughout the school. Friendships formed across nationalities help foster mutual understanding, respect, and a global outlook.
To support non-native English speakers, the College has a dedicated English as an Additional Language (EAL) department and three specialist staff members. EAL lessons are taught in small groups and tailored to each student’s individual needs, with regular reviews to adjust support as needed. The EAL team works closely with subject teachers and tutors to ensure students can fully access the curriculum and thrive academically. Additional help is always available, and weekly homework reinforces learning.
Students are also supported in preparing for recognised qualifications such as the IELTS and IGCSE English as a Second Language, helping to equip them for further education in the UK and beyond. Entrance Examinations in English and Maths ensure students are placed at the right level prior to joining. This strong academic and pastoral support ensures international students settle in quickly and enjoy the full benefits of an excellent British education.
Boarding at St. Francis’ College is available for girls from Year 6 to Year 13, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment that feels like a true “home-away-from-home.” Situated on the top two floors of the main school building, the Boarding House offers immediate access to key facilities, including the dining hall, library, Chapel, gym, and study rooms, ensuring a safe and supportive space for both academic focus and personal development.
Our boarding structure creates a strong sense of family and community, where students are encouraged to build friendships, develop independence, and feel valued. The boarding team organises a lively programme of evening activities and weekend trips, offering students the chance to explore Letchworth and other parts of the UK, while forming lasting memories with peers from around the world.
We take pride in the cultural diversity within our boarding community. For international students, boarding at St. Francis’ offers the opportunity to improve their English language skills, experience British culture, and prepare for UK qualifications such as GCSEs and A Levels. For all boarders, whether from the UK or overseas, the experience fosters personal growth, academic achievement, and readiness for future success.
Our boarders are fully integrated into the wider school community and benefit from the same high standards of education, pastoral care, and enrichment opportunities as day students. With a focus on well-being, personal achievement, and global citizenship, boarding at St. Francis’ is a unique and rewarding experience that supports each girl to thrive in every aspect of life.
