About Milton Abbey School

Mission statement

“To place the individual at the centre of the school experience and promote confidence and self-esteem in all pupils, partially through the bespoke education offered tailoring each pupil’s education to make the most of their individual skills and talents.”

Academics

Milton Abbey School prides itself on providing an education that is tailored to each individual student. The school offers a variety of vocational and BTEC courses alongside GCSE and A Level exams, and students have the opportunity to follow whichever curriculum is best suited to their skills and abilities. Approximately one third of Sixth Form pupils study the A Level curriculum, one third study a combination of A Levels and BTECs, and one third study BTEC qualifications. Milton Abbey is one of the best UK boarding schools for BTEC curriculum with approximately 15 subjects to choose from, and the school is one of very few independent schools in the UK to offer Extended BTEC qualifications at Level 3.

The small class sizes at Milton Abbey (an average of 12 up to GCSE and an average of 6 at A Level) allow teachers to focus their attention on individual pupils and get the best out of every student. This tailored approach sets pupils up for success after school with 96% of those who apply to university gaining their first-choice option in 2021.

Activities & sports

Due to Milton Abbey’s unique approach to teaching, sport plays an important role in students’ experience at school. Furthermore, the school’s impressive facilities make it easy for students to do well in sports they already know, as well as try out new sports and pursue new interests. In 2018, over 90% of students represented Milton Abbey in a sport, and the school offers an impressive sports scholarship programme. Milton Abbey offers sports such as rugby, hockey, swimming, tennis and road cycling, amongst others. Two sports with particularly impressive provisions at Milton Abbey are football and golf. For example, the school has its own football programme within which students have access to coaches accredited by the Football Association. They can also play football alongside studying for a BTEC sports course so that their education is adapted to their specific requirements as an athlete. Pupils interested in golf have access to the school’s nine-hole golf course, indoor golf simulator and one-to-one training from the head of golf.

The school also offers opportunities within drama and the performing arts, with the chance for every student to get involved whether it be on stage or behind the scenes.

International student community

Milton Abbey welcomes students from over 20 countries and approximately 30% of the student population is made up of international students. This creates a diverse community at Milton Abbey, where pupils can make friends from around the world. The school also offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) for those who are not fluent in English, giving them a personalised education that is designed for them to get the most out of it.

Boarding life

Boarding at Milton Abbey gives students an understanding and nurturing environment to learn in. The boarding houses are arranged so that students live in small groups and go through an induction programme to get them integrated into the school community quickly. The boarding experience helps students make life-long friends, with dedicated Houseparents and Staff ready to cater to their individual needs and help them thrive. Milton Abbey is a full boarding school so all pupils stay in school every weekend – meaning that international pupils aren’t the only ones in school at weekends. Furthermore, exeat weekends at Milton Abbey are not compulsory for overseas pupils.
