Academic Families works with more than 450 schools throughout the UK, and we have become experts at matching children to the right boarding school for them in order to ensure each student thrives.
We're delighted to present one of our partner schools:
Millfield Senior and Prep School in Somerset, England.
“To break the mould as an activist educator and provide an education and experience that honours the individual.”
Millfield School is focused on providing a broad education which not only allows students to excel in their exam years but also gives them the life skills needed for adulthood. The high staff-to-student ratio means that students are taught in small sets and can receive appropriate support. The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum, within which students can tailor their choices to their individual interests and strengths.
The school generally has a strong academic record, with 84% of GCSE grades being A*- B in 2019. A range of academic options are offered including A Level and BTEC. The range of subjects on offer is wide - there are 29 A Level options and 5 BTEC options including art and design, business, enterprise and entrepreneurship, and sport. In 2020, 89 pupils went on to study at Russell Group universities, and an increasing number of students are successfully progressing to Higher Education further afield, such as in the USA or Canada. Popular UK university destinations have included Exeter, Nottingham, King's College and Edinburgh.
Millfield is a particularly sporty school, and students who attend will find that sport is a central part of their student experience. Whilst many Millfield School pupils are talented athletes, there are opportunities for all abilities to get involved. The school recognises the importance of those who want to enjoy sport recreationally just as much as those who are undertaking more serious training. The sporting facilities at Millfield School are outstanding. As many as 400 pupils play football at Millfield, and the girls' football team have their own dedicated coach. The 11 full-sized football pitches provide the opportunity for pupils of any skill level to participate. There are multiple PGA qualified coaches for golfers, LTA coaches for tennis players, and the school is one of the best swimming schools in the UK, with 6 full-time swimming coaches.
Millfield School does not limit itself to sport either – students have plenty of opportunities to partake in art, design, dance, drama and music outside of the classroom. Its music department hosts 25 practice rooms and fully equipped recording studios.
With a vast international community, Millfield aims to promote intercultural understanding and respect. The campus is home to hundreds of international students and more than 70 different nationalities.
Additional language support is offered should it be required, and boarding staff are sensitive to the challenges faced by new overseas pupils. Students can also benefit from the International Students’ Association (ISA) which exists to celebrate the cultural diversity of the student body.
International students do not need to worry about being alone at weekends as around 75% of Millfield’s students are full boarders and live at school seven days a week. There are 19 boarding houses, all of which are staffed by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, and a resident Assistant as well as matrons and tutors who all work together to ensure students are safe and supported.
Houses are fully equipped with excellent kitchen facilities, common rooms and spaces for prep and study. Most students share a bedroom but pupils in Upper Sixth have single rooms.
