About Millfield School

Mission statement

“To break the mould as an activist educator and provide an education and experience that honours the individual.”

Academics

Millfield provides a broad and balanced education which not only prepares students for public examinations but also gives them the confidence to achieve success throughout their adult lives. The high staff-to-student ratio means that students are taught in small sets and receive appropriate support. The school has a strong academic record, with 80.5% of GCSE grades being A*-B in 2023, and 96% within the Top 100 students. At A level, 57.7% of students achieved A*-B in 2023, and 93.4% in the Top 100 students. An exceptionally wide range of academic options are offered including GCSE, A Level and BTEC.

Activities & sports

Sport is synonymous with Millfield, and the school is proud to emphasise the significant impact it can have on student development. Millfield’s vision is to be the world leader for the development of children, and a key strand to the mission is to be the best at immersing students in limitless academic, artistic and sporting opportunities.

Football is the largest participation sport across both genders at Millfield with almost 400 players taking part and the school has a notable reputation as an academy-level development pathway. The girls' football programme has expanded rapidly in recent years, and the programme offers more contact hours than some Regional Talent Clubs, something unrivalled in the independent school sector. The girls’ teams recently reached the semi-final of the ISFA and ESFA in U18s, and the semi-final of the ISFA in U15s.

The school also recognises the importance of those who want to enjoy sport recreationally just as much as those who are undertaking more serious training. Millfield does not limit itself to sports either; students have plenty of opportunities to partake in art, design, dance, drama and music outside of the classroom. The music department hosts 25 practice rooms, a 350-seat concert hall, a theatre and fully equipped recording studios.

International student community

Millfield is extremely proud of its international character. Students are welcomed from more than 75 different nationalities, which provides a rich cultural diversity and a wonderful opportunity for students and staff alike to learn about cultural differences and promote tolerance, respect and understanding - all important values in our modern-day global culture. Additional language support is offered should it be required, and boarding staff are sensitive to the challenges faced by new overseas students.

Boarding life

The boarding environment at Millfield encourages students to live their lives to the full in as many spheres as possible, allowing individuality to flourish. The houses are the focal point of students’ lives at school. All boarders (around 75% of students) are full boarders, living at school seven days a week and there is a vibrant weekend programme of activities.

There are 19 boarding houses, all of which are staffed by a resident Housemaster or Housemistress, and a resident assistant as well as house managers and tutors who all work together to ensure students are safe and supported. Houses are fully equipped with excellent kitchen facilities, common rooms and spaces for prep and study. Most students share a bedroom but pupils in Upper Sixth have single rooms.
