About Merchiston Castle School

Mission statement

“We are a community in which boys are inspired to learn and develop into young men who are fully prepared for the future ahead of them.”

Academics

Merchiston Castle's excellent exam results and the destinations of its leavers speak for themselves. The school gets to know every boy: his strengths, and areas for development; his challenges, and how to help him overcome them; his areas of interest, and what motivates him. Merchiston will talk to him, encourage and stretch him.

Activities & sports

Boys can choose from up to 20 sports at Merchiston and Sport is genuinely for all. The school has a long and successful sporting tradition producing 24 international cricket players, 60 international rugby players and Olympians too. Its Tennis Academy is number 1 in Scotland and No. 2 in the United Kingdom and its Golf Academy is consistently Top 10 ranked at ISGA tournaments.

Merchiston also has an impressive arts programme which allows boys to nurture their creativity through theatre trips and music performances at many of Edinburgh’s fantastic venues. With yearly stage productions and extra-curricular activities including jazz band, choral society, pipe band and string group, there are plenty of chances for students to get involved with music and performing too.

International student community

International students make up around 20% of the boarding community at Merchiston Castle School and the welcoming campus is home to students from over 20 different countries. The school values the culture and experiences of every student at Merchiston and the richness that differing backgrounds, experience and culture bring to the school. For non-native English speakers, Merchiston provides individualised language programmes for students who would benefit from extra language support.

Boarding life

About 65% of pupils at Merchiston Castle School board and the proportion of boarders is generally higher in the older age groups. The school keeps their boarders busy with a full programme of trips each weekend. Bowling, watersports, go-karting and cinema visits are some of the most popular weekend activities with Merchiston boarders.
