About Lucton School

Mission statement

“Founded on Christian principles to which it still adheres, the school welcomes pupils of all faiths and none. In line with its founding principles, it seeks to cherish what is good, wholesome, honest, worthwhile and true. It aims to bring out the best in every individual, to recognise each person’s unique gifts, talents and abilities and to promote a secure and happy environment in which pupils can flourish academically, socially, intellectually and physically.”

Academics

Lucton School has an excellent academic curriculum and prides itself on the outstanding exam results that its students produce. The well-rounded and holistic nature of the curriculum means that students have many GCSE and A-Level subject options; the school also offers The British Horse Society Equine Excellence Pathway in Complete Horsemanship qualification and BTEC Health and Social Care. In 2022 GCSE results were above the national average, with 100% of pupils achieving 8-9 in ICT; 57% achieving 7 or above in Chemistry (H); and 50% 7 or above in Geography. In the same year, 30% of A-level papers scored between A* and A, and almost 60% of students achieved grades A*-B.

Activities & sports

Lucton School offers a wide range of extracurricular activities, recognising that a varied and active school life is important for children’s development into thriving young adults. These activities include a variety of clubs like chess, guitar, journalism and electronics. Students can also take part in outdoor activities like the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) which sees them doing challenging and enriching activities to build important skills in self-confidence, selflessness and resilience. There is also the opportunity to get involved with the performing arts, with students being able to take lessons and performances in dance and drama.

The school promotes fitness and wellbeing through their sports programme. Students can participate in sports like rugby, netball, football, swimming and cricket, among many others. The school particularly excels in equestrian sports, with the campus housing two all-weather outdoor arenas and miles of off-road paths to ride on. Lessons on well-trained horses and ponies are available for students of all abilities so that students can ride recreationally or competitively and are able to start with no previous equestrian knowledge. Students can develop their dressage, jumping and competition skills and can join teams that compete with other schools; pupils can also work towards professional qualifications, such as the BHSQ qualification in coaching.

International student community

Lucton has a long history of welcoming international students, providing a safe and comfortable environment where they can thrive. At Lucton, children will benefit from small class sizes of around 12-15 students, ensuring a highly supportive school environment. As 50% of boarders are from the UK, English is the predominant language spoken at the school, ensuring international students can quickly improve their English skills. Alongside this, the school offers English as an Additional Language for students to work on their listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Boarding life

Boarding is at the heart of life at Lucton for many students, with two fully equipped boarding houses. Both have live-in house parents who are available at any time to support and give guidance to the children. The boarding facilities include communal lounges, a cinema, American Pool and Table Tennis Tables and a large kitchen-cafe. During the evenings, students can use the teacher-supervised homework sessions to support their learning. On weekends there is an activity programme offering students the chance to participate in fun activities such as visiting theme parks and major UK cities, or go hiking, river rafting or paint-balling.
