Academics

At Loretto School, teachers focus on each individual pupil and help them realise their full potential. Although in Scotland, Loretto School offers the English curriculum of GCSEs and A Level exams and pupils consistently achieve outstanding results. More than 90% of pupils go to their chosen university – including Oxford and Cambridge, St. Andrews, Newcastle and Durham. An increasing number of students also go to university in the USA, with Loretto being an SAT test centre. Loretto School has a core curriculum and pupils can choose from a wide variety of other subjects as well. There is a staff to pupil ratio of 1:7, so teachers know pupils on an individual basis.

Activities & sports

Sport plays an important part in the lives of Loretto pupils. There is a wide range of sports available: hockey, lacrosse and tennis/cricket for girls and rugby, hockey and cricket for boys. Loretto School also has a Golf Academy which was established in 2002, and which has both indoor and outdoor facilities. Golf is delivered to more than 200 pupils each week, and Loretto School is located nearby to the oldest playing course in the world. Loretto School prides itself on nurturing fully rounded students and it encourages participation in the creative and performing arts with impressive drama, music and dance departments.

In fact, Loretto has a very strong reputation for music, with extensive musical opportunities available from the Early Years all the way through to Sixth Form. In the Senior School, there are many choirs and ensembles available to participate in and regular opportunities to perform. The school’s excellent music facilities include a concert hall, recording studio, chapel and impressive collection of instruments (including Bösendorfer and Yamaha pianos), offering students the chance to thrive.

International student community

Loretto School has a large international student community, welcoming pupils of 25 different nationalities. Around 40% of boarders are international students. Loretto has an English as an Additional Language (EAL) department which delivers English courses that are specifically tailored to each individual pupil. Any specific cultural needs are accommodated appropriately and sensitively.

Boarding life

The boarding community is at the heart of Loretto School. Approximately 75% of Senior School pupils are boarders and there are 5 different boarding houses – three houses for boys and two houses for girls. Houseparents are a crucial part of boarding life at Loretto. They get to know, and support, each student on an individual basis and are always on hand to give advice to pupils and to encourage them to make the most of their time at Loretto School.
