About Kingsley School Devon

Mission statement

"Achieving success and happiness through positive mental health and wellbeing."

Academics

The curriculum is distinct, comprising a Core Curriculum with 45-minute morning lessons and an Expansive Curriculum delivered in longer afternoon sessions. It offers traditional subjects from Year 7 to Year 13 and emphasizes project-based and applied learning. Mental health and wellbeing are prioritized for better outcomes. The unique approach blends traditional education with modern methodologies, fostering well-rounded individuals ready for academic success and life beyond the classroom.

Kingsley Students achieve great results. The school's focus is on each individual student’s progress and achievement throughout their time at school, and its aim is for every student to achieve one-grade higher than they would at any other school in the UK.
Kingsley offers a wide range of GCSE, BTEC and A level subjects. Leavers' destinations include Oxford, UCL, King’s College London, University of Exeter, University of Warwick and University of Manchester.

Activities & sports

The Sports Pathway ensures that students are able to maximise their participation and enjoyment, while discovering and developing their talents and interests across a diverse range of sporting opportunities, including recreational and accessible sports. As well as popular team sports such as Football, Rugby, Netball and Basketball, Kingsley has an exciting programme of niche academy sports including Surfing, Judo, Gymnastics and Rugby.

Kingsley School's Outdoor Education Pathway is truly unique, offering a range of outdoor skills and activities designed to ignite new interests and fuel existing passions for outdoor adventure. As part of the Expansive Curriculum, every student is able to progress through different levels in a range of activities as part of their weekly timetable.

International student community

Kingsley has a diverse community where local day, boarding and international students mix within lessons, during activities and within the boarding houses. Kingsley represents over 20 different nationalities, where students are celebrated for their individuality and their various cultural backgrounds – Currently the school has students from France, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, China, Armenia, India, Mexico, Luxembourg, Nigeria, Caymen Islands, Australia, America to name but a few.

Students whose first language is not English are assessed and may be offered the opportunity to study an IGCSE in English as an Additional Language alongside or instead of first language English GCSE. They may also be offered a programme of individual or small group English lessons, which are put in place to develop their general English language skills and to help them with English for their subjects.

Boarding life

Boarding at Kingsley School offers incredible experiences that go beyond academics. It fosters a close-knit community, where lifelong friendships are formed, and diverse backgrounds enrich perspectives. The Boarding Houses provide a supportive and nurturing environment, where students can readily access resources and assistance. Independence and self-reliance are nurtured as boarders learn to manage their time effectively and develop essential life skills.

A plethora of extracurricular activities and events allow for personal growth and exploration of interests. With caring staff and fellow boarders, boarding becomes a home away from home, offering an unforgettable journey of self-discovery, cherished memories, and a solid foundation for future success. There are three boarding houses at Kingsley School. Each has a range of study-bedrooms, bathrooms, recreational lounges, kitchen-cafes, a laundry and outdoor recreational space.

Weekdays and weekends offer diverse options, taking advantage of the scenic Devon coast, local beaches, national parks, and tourist spots. The school theatre hosts Bideford Cinema, showcasing the latest movies for boarders at no extra charge. Additionally, boarders can explore the charming market town of Bideford, visiting supermarkets, cafes, and independent shops after school and on weekends.
