About Fettes College

Mission statement

"Our mission at Fettes is to develop broadly educated, confident, and thoughtful individuals who are prepared for life after Fettes and all the opportunities and challenges it will bring."

Academics

Fettes follows the GCSE curriculum, and then offers pupils the choice between A Level exams or the IB diploma in their final years. The school boasts a strong academic record, and with a 1:6 teacher to pupil ratio, students can benefit from engaging and focused lessons. With 20 subject options for pupils studying GCSEs, students at Fettes gain a broad and diverse subject knowledge. The school is also one of the top 10 IB schools in the UK and sees equally strong A Level results, with 88% of students achieving grades A* - B.

The learning environment at Fettes is academically rigorous but still seeks to nurture creativity and independent thinking. The high level of attainment means that 89% of pupils leave Fettes to join their first or second choice university.

Activities & sports

Students have access to nearly 100 different co-curricular activities and societies at Fettes College including over 20 sports. From the Duke of Edinburgh Award to anatomy club, shooting or baking, students will have a range of unique opportunities to challenge themselves and to teach them new skills. Rugby is one of the school’s major sports with opportunities for beginners and experts alike. The school also boasts indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a 25 metre swimming pool and an on-site gym.

Facilities and resources for students who want to get involved in music and art include dedicated music rooms, a specialist library and a permanent gallery space.

International student community

Fettes welcomes students from all over the world and has a vibrant boarding community. 10% of Fettes pupils are international and the student body has 40 countries represented within it. Fettes deem themselves as “proudly Scottish with a global outlook.”

Boarding life

70% of Fettes College students are full boarders and the school is committed to providing an exciting programme outside of classroom hours that keeps students active and engaged. There are nine boarding houses at Fettes, including one dedicated to Upper 6th students where they can experience a greater sense of independence. Students in all boarding houses will be supported by a Houseparent, as well as their assistants and matrons who are fully committed to aiding all aspects of student wellbeing.

“I always feel very comfortable when I know that one of my pupils has Academic Families in their support network. Academic Families are easy to deal with, always well informed, and there is no question that they put the best interests of the pupil above all else. The channels of communication with Academic Families are always open and this makes my job so much easier."
