About Durham School

Mission statement

“Within a community shaped by moral integrity and kindness, Durham School aims to cultivate responsibility and ambition, to ensure that every Dunelmian can thrive, be happy and make a positive mark in the world.”

Academics

Durham School takes academic excellence very seriously, using the value-added metric to measure how students improve over the course of their time at the school. Class sizes are small, ensuring that pupils receive the attention and support that they need to excel. The school offers GCSE and A Level exams, as well as a Cambridge Pre-U exam in design technology, and a BTEC diploma in business.

The school’s commitment to having a positive impact on students can be seen through the impressive exam results that are achieved. In 2022, 70.9% of GCSE exams at Durham School were between A* – B and 17.5% of results were graded at A*. In the same year, 48% of students achieved A* – A grades in their A Level exams and 73.6% achieved A* – B. Furthermore, 85% of pupils went to Russell Group universities.

Activities & sports

In parallel with its impressive academic focus, Durham School has a co-curricular programme that is unmatched in the region. The school believes that activities outside of school hours are an important way to develop well-rounded individuals. Durham School provides excellent opportunities for music and has one of the largest cathedral choirs in the country, who regularly perform in the prestigious Durham Cathedral.

The school also has a high standard of drama productions, with house drama competitions, drama clubs and school productions giving pupils the skills they need to pursue a career in theatre. Participation in sport is highly encouraged, whether it be recreationally, representing the school in competitions or simply to maintain health and fitness – Durham is able to fulfil the needs of every student.

All these activities are made possible by the impressive facilities available at the school which include the school’s music technology, practice and teaching rooms as well as many large rehearsal spaces. Additionally, students have access to an Astroturf sports field, sports halls, gym facilities, a pool, and the Durham University Sports Centre.

International student community

Durham School values diversity and inclusion and welcomes students from 19 countries across the world, making up most of the school’s boarding community. The school offers a friendly and caring community and finds that international students settle in very quickly. For pupils who are non-native English speakers, Durham School has an English as an Additional Language (EAL) department which provides support so that students can become fully integrated into the school community.

Boarding life

Students boarding at Durham School will stay in one of three boarding houses, each one with its own identity and spirit. They will develop close bonds with those in their houses, living together and taking part in the range of house activities the school provides. Students are given access to a kitchen, common room and quiet workspaces, as well as the campus facilities. Houseparents live in the boarding houses and work alongside a team of experienced pastoral staff to ensure that someone is always available if a student needs support. The school organises a variety of fun and exciting weekend activities for boarding students, including paintballing, go-karting and trips to the beach.
