About Dragon School

Mission statement

“To inspire, encourage and develop free-thinking, confident young people who reach for the sun.”

Academics

The curriculum at Dragon School caters to the needs of the children and prepares them for the next stage in their academic journey. On top of the core subjects of English and Maths, students also study Modern and Classical Languages, Science, Humanities, Music and FPE (Faith, Philosophy and Ethics), Programming, Art, Drama, Design and Technology and PE. The school offers a unique and individual approach to education with their small class sizes giving each child the one-on-one attention that they need to thrive and grow into happy and confident young adults.

Activities & sports

Dragon further enriches the students’ school experience through a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Each child participates in two mandatory activity lessons per week, generally rotating through 12 activities per year; the activities are selected by the school based on the child’s individual needs and interests. Mainly voluntary after school activities are also available to develop children’s confidence and independence.

The arts are popular among students. The school produces plays every year and children can fill onstage roles and help with stage management, sound and lighting, set design and music production and playing. The school encourages children to learn an instrument and play in one of the 60 ensembles, including bands, choirs, piano trios and string quartets.

Sport is important at Dragon School, with rowing being a particularly popular activity due to the schools direct access to the River Cherwell, which passes through the grounds. Alumni have competed in the Olympics and World Championships. Each year the school hosts their own internal regatta on the river with opportunities for all students to race. Other popular sports include swimming and golf, where students can compete against other schools. Golfing students also compete at the ISGA League competition and the IAPS championships.

International student community

Dragon School is has a diverse and international community with students from over 18 countries. To help new international students become assimilated into life in the UK, the school offers English as an Additional Language lessons for non-native English speakers. Students students are offered one-on-one teaching to build their confidence and reach their potential in every aspect of school.

Boarding life

Students will live in one of ten boarding houses at Dragon School. Here they are supervised by Houseparents who are committed to upholding the wellbeing of every child in the boarding house. Boarding at Dragon School instils students with important skills like independence, organisation and personal responsibility. Children are offered a wide range of exciting weekend experiences, such as trips to theme parks and camping experiences, as well on campus activities like laser tag, circus skills and field games. Older children participate in ‘Dragon Quest’ - a new, skills based, enrichment programme driven by the key principles of ‘discover, develop, dare.’
