About Cheltenham College

Mission statement

“At Cheltenham College we aim to equip pupils to lead fulfilled and purposeful lives by providing an excellent all-round education founded on Christian principles.”

Academics

Cheltenham College prides itself on its diverse academic curriculum, aiming to instil a curiosity and love of learning within all children that will stay with them long after they leave school. All GCSE students must take a modern foreign language and A level students enhance their academic profiles by undertaking the EPQ. In 2022, 60% of GCSE grades awarded scored in the 9-7 range. In the same year, 80% of A level grades were in the A*-B range. Of the graduating cohort, 83% of students went to study at Russell Group Universities.

Activities & sports

The school has an extensive clubs and societies programme which allow students to explore varied interests and develop new skills outside of the classroom. These include polo, clay-pigeon shooting, chess, debating and pottery. Cheltenham College also has strong connections with the military and students can develop leadership skills by taking part in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). The arts are also popular at Cheltenham College, with students putting on over six theatrical productions every year. Pupils have the opportunity to perform on stage or fill roles backstage, working on lighting, sound and stage management, among other things. Students develop important skills like confidence and resilience as well as the technical skills that come with their chosen role. The school has numerous choirs, instrumental ensembles and orchestras, and provides one-on-one voice and instrument lessons. Students can demonstrate their musical talent in the formal and informal concerts in the chapel and the college theatre.

The school offers a range of recreational and competitive sports including badminton, cricket, football, hockey, netball, swimming and equestrian sports like dressage, show jumping and polo. There is also a College Talented Athlete Programme which sees students benefitting from expert coaching, body conditioning and mental preparation for competitions. Their facilities and coaches - many of whom are international athletes or former Olympians ensure - that every student can achieve excellence from the sports programme.

International student community

Cheltenham College welcomes more than 100 international students from over 30 different countries. The warm and accepting community ensures students feel at home and quickly become accustomed to life in the UK. English and Additional Language tutoring from specialist teachers is available for students who are not fluent so that they can quickly improve their English proficiency and become fully integrated into the school community. The student-led International Committee organises regular events to celebrate cultural diversity at the school.

Boarding life

Cheltenham College offers boarding for students from the ages of 7-18, with a significant number of pupils being boarders. The college has 11 boarding houses with excellent facilities and house parents, creating a warm and welcoming environment where students can thrive. Each house is home to a small-tight-knit community of students from all year groups, socialising and living with their friends, building bonds that will last a lifetime. Along with the boarding staff, older students may mentor and look after younger ones, helping them with any problems, and creating a truly caring community.
