About St Lawrence College

Mission statement

"St Lawrence College aims to add value to every child, whether that is in the classroom, theatre, concert hall, sports pitch or in the local community. Our belief is that a genuinely holistic education will develop individuals who not only gain excellent academic results, but who also hone the soft skills required to thrive in the 21st century marketplace: positivity, flexibility, teamwork skills and a solution-focussed approach to problems”

Academics

St Lawrence College follows the GCSE and A-Level curriculum, with additional qualifications such as the EPQ and LIBF as options over summer terms in Sixth Form. Students usually take 10 GCSE subjects, with some taking 8 or 9 if they do not take English literature or choose two sciences instead of three. St Lawrence College believes that this is the best number of subjects that allows for a good range and the opportunity to achieve high grades. Following on from that, there are an impressive 19 A-Level options, with the choices regularly reviewed to ensure they are relevant and desired by university admissions.

St Lawrence College boasts excellent academic results, including more than 75% of GCSE students achieving 9-6 grades in Arabic, Art, Chemistry, Chinese, German and Physics. In A-Levels, St Lawrence College excels specifically in Art, where 75% of students achieved an A*. These results led students to continue onto higher education at top universities such as Warwick, Bristol, Exeter, Loughborough, and Imperial College London.

Activities & sports

Although globally recognised for its academics, St Lawrence College also prioritises the development of students’ wider skills and experiences through their extra-curricular activities. Specific time periods in the school week are dedicated to activities such as Chess, Choir, Dance, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Film, Theatre, Golf, Fencing, Horse Riding, and more!

St Lawrence College also offers brilliant and relevant field trips, such as Art students visiting London galleries and Geography trips to Iceland.

All sports are played to a high standard, with hockey being the dominant sport for achievement, including national titles in 2017, 2018, and twice in 2020. The excellent facilities for training and matches have helped secure these titles, along with additional specialist staff.

International student community

International students make up 30% of the total student population at St Lawrence College. Most are boarders, who take part in the academic and pastoral life at school, along with the extra-curricular activities. They also have an excellent EAL Centre onsite for students whose English is not ready to study all their subjects in English.

Boarding life

St Lawrence College warmly welcomes boarders into its comfortable atmosphere and fantastic boarding facilities, where each boarder has an en-suite and a recently renovated room. Boarders will benefit from the excellent teaching at St Lawrence College, and then benefit even further from the evening and weekend extra-curriculars and activities. The school looks after boarders through strong pastoral care from houseparents and an emphasis on supporting one another in boarding houses as peers. Houseparents and their families also live in the boarding house, along with a Resident Tutor so that there is at least one staff member available at all times. There is an onsite medical centre that houses qualified nurses who are there all throughout the term.

Prep boarders (7-13 years old) are encouraged to bring their own bedding from home, which helps them feel more comfortable and at ease throughout a big transition. Their dorms are cosy and warm, whilst the rest of the building includes a library, a large atrium, an IT room, and a dedicated social area. Boarders can also use the sports centre and swimming pool.

The senior boarders (13-18 years old) will be given single or double rooms to grant them more private space to live and work in as they age. The rooms are also en-suite, with plenty of storage space and kitchens in each house.

Exeat weekends are optional and occur five times throughout the year. Boarders can leave school over the weekend or stay at their boarding house and have a fun weekend with friends, with the option to visit the local towns.
