About Ruthin School

Mission statement

Our mission is to enhance the education of our students through a partnership in learning, enabling them to realise their full potential within a caring, nurturing, and secure environment equipping them to be resilient individuals in preparation to face the challenges of the 21st Century.

Academics

At Ruthin School, academic excellence goes hand in hand with a deep love of learning. From September 2025, we are proud to become a High Performance Learning (HPL) school - adopting a world-class, research-based approach that will equip students with the skills, confidence, and mindset they need to succeed not only in exams, but throughout life.

HPL is built on the belief that high performance is attainable by all. Rather than focusing solely on memorisation or exam technique, students will learn how to think critically, solve problems creatively, and respond to challenges with resilience. It’s an approach that nurtures ambition and independence, helping each student unlock their full potential.

Ruthin School is building on a strong foundation of academic success - in 2025, 92% of students achieved grades 9 - 5 at GCSE and A* - C at A-Level. The introduction of HPL will enhance this further, enriching the learning culture and preparing students to thrive far beyond the classroom.

We are proud to be the pathway to the best universities in the UK and around the world. Every year we send students to Oxbridge, G5 (top five) UK universities and Russell Group universities as well as many internationally.

Our students receive bespoke support in the sixth form to help them gain the university places they aspire to on the best course for their future ambitions.

Activities & sports

At Ruthin School, education goes far beyond the classroom. Our Electives programme is a key part of personal development, helping students grow in confidence, build character, and gain valuable life skills that will serve them well in future careers. From teamwork and leadership to communication and resilience, Electives encourage students to explore new interests, develop talents, and build friendships - all while supporting wellbeing and mental health.

Electives are integrated into the school day, ensuring that every student can benefit from a balanced and enriching experience. In addition, daily after-school clubs provide opportunities for relaxation, fun, and social connection - an important complement to the demands of academic life. Whether it's playing in matches or enjoying creative activities with friends, these moments often become some of the most treasured memories of school life.

Our Badminton Academy is a proud example of how Ruthin School supports well-rounded achievement. Student-athletes receive full academic support alongside their training, with tailored arrangements in place to help them succeed both on the court and in the classroom. Whether they’re competing at tournaments or studying for exams, our athletes are guided to reach their full potential in every aspect of school life.

In addition to badminton, students at Ruthin School enjoy a wide range of sporting opportunities including netball, volleyball, football, and more. Whether competing competitively or playing for fun, sport is a valued part of school life - promoting health, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.

International student community

We are proud to be a diverse and inclusive school, welcoming both local day students and boarders from over 20 countries worldwide. Our international community is at the heart of who we are, and we actively encourage students to embrace this unique environment - building friendships, sharing cultural perspectives, and learning from one another.

In Years 7 - 9, students benefit from a broad and balanced curriculum that includes Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Physical Education (PE), and English as an Additional Language (EAL) where needed. International students may choose EAL as a GCSE subject, and many also have the opportunity to take a GCSE in their native language, where available.

Boarding life

Boarding at Ruthin School is more than just a place to stay - it’s a life-shaping experience. Our students gain lasting friendships, cultural insight, academic support, and the independence to thrive.

With dedicated houses for boys and girls from Year 7 to Upper Sixth, our boarding community brings together students from across the globe. It’s a vibrant environment where diverse cultures meet and lifelong memories are made.

Academic support is a key part of boarding life. Evening prep is supervised by teachers, and students benefit from a peaceful, inspiring campus that supports focused learning and personal growth. Each boarding house is led by a resident House Parent, with support from Boarding and Graduate Assistants. Teaching staff are also actively involved, helping to create a warm and supportive atmosphere. Life as a boarder is full and rewarding. Weekdays are structured with engaging lessons and evening activities, while weekends offer exciting trips across the UK - and even beyond. At Ruthin, boarders are encouraged to make the most of every opportunity.
